Ear Hygiene for Large Breed Dogs

Almost nothing beats watching your pup’s big floppy ears bounce around.

What is not fun is watching them struggle with ear gunk build-up, or worse, an infection.

Therefore, excellent ear hygiene is critical. I inspect Bruno and Beau’s ears once a week.

The amount of gunk build-up is dependent on the frequency and length of time they have spent outside that week. It is rare that I do not decide to clean one, if not both, ears after inspection. The amount of debris is sometimes alarming.

Stenches (sometimes yeasty), redness/inflammation, shaking their head more frequently all may indicate their ears need to be cleaned. Keeping their ears dry and well ventilated can help the build up of gunk and stave off an infectious process.

There are a plethora of cleaning solutions.

I use Zymox Otic Enzymatic solution. I use this solution and 4x4 gauze to remove the debris. I can tell they dislike the process but they allow me to do it because they appreciate the comfort that follows.
